Motivation to Move to Environmentally Friendly Products The use of lead and other hazardous materials has gained attention lately. The European Union has acted on requests to remove hazardous materials by creating three new directives. The Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive is aimed at reducing the hazardous materials content in electronic products as well as increasing the recycling efforts for these products. This directive becomes mandatory in Europe on July 1, 2006. RoHS specifically bans or restricts the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDE). This directive applies to most electronics, but has exemptions for certain very high reliability applications. Lastly, while these directives motivate us to remove hazardous materials from our products, our customers and our interest in promoting a cleaner environment add to our motivation.
Directive 2002/95/EC Restrictions on Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive 2002/95/EC requires that our products be free (except for trace impurities) of mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE and lead as of 2006-7-1. Lead can still be used as an alloying additive in copper. For further information concerning the lead free directives, please visit the Tyco Electronics Lead Free Web Site.
